Accounting Principals is seeking a Senior Payroll Accountant for a contract-to-hire position in Richmond, VA. The contract portion of the assignment will last 3-6 months with the likely possibility of being hired on permanently. This position is full-time and in-office.


Responsibilities:

  • Implement, maintain and review payroll processing systems to ensure timely and accurate processing of payroll transactions.
  • Prepare and maintain accurate records and reports of payroll transactions.
  • Coordinate audits and interact with internal/ external auditors.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state and local payroll, wage and hour laws/ best practices.
  • Perform bi-weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual tax reconciliations.
  • Prepare timely regulatory filings with the Department of Labor (DOL), Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and other regulatory agencies.
  • Ensure proper tax treatment, accounting and disposition of withholdings (i.e. taxes, deductions for benefits, retirement contributions, etc.).
  • Maintain employee database/ records.
  • Contribute information to the Retirement Board, Retiree Health Committee and 401(k) Committee.
  • Make recommendations for company actions to effectively anticipate and budget for changing payroll administration/costs.
  • Analyze financial statements, employee payroll information and cost.
  • Reconcile Payroll Accounts General Ledger (GL) and resolve discrepancies.

  • Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Business Administration, Human Resources or a related field, OR equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills may be acquired.
  • 5+ years of professional work experience involving administration of automated payroll systems.
  • Experience with payroll audits and financial accounting.
  • MUST have experience with Workday HCM software. (Experience with UKG, Ultimate software, ADP SmartCompliance and other similar applications is also a plus.)
  • MUST be able to work extended hours, evenings and weekends on short notice. Occasional travel required.
  • Proficient analytical and report writing skills. 
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to handle confidential matters with discretion.
  • Skilled in setting priorities and working in a highly-pressured office.
  • Attention to detail and strong mathematical and accounting skills.
  • Experience filing IRS and other government benefit forms.
  • Human Resources or Payroll certifications such as Certified Payroll Professional (CPP). (Preferred)
  • Experience applying major benefit laws such as ERISA and COBRA and regulations governing pension and other benefit plans. (Preferred)
  • Experience and skill using personal computers in Windows environment. (Preferred)

    Compensation:

  • Hourly: $65-125 for contract
