Accounting support jobs typically revolve around the basic handling of money and record keeping. Some of the most common account support jobs include administrative assistant, data entry, and customer service.
Administrative Assistant
An administrative assistant is an accounting support job that typically require some experience in the field. Responsibilities can be quite varied depending on which administrative position, or positions, one is supporting. Some of the duties may include being responsible for various expense accounts, assisting with new personnel, scheduling and planning activities, copying, and filing. The variety of duties makes it necessary for job candidates to be proficient in computer and email software and have excellent communications skills.
Data Entry
A data entry job will not generally require any previous training or experience. Many data entry employers may require a typing test and possibly a simulated data entry test in order to determine if the candidate is suitable for the position. Data entry encompasses a number of different jobs. It could be a payment processing position, which would entail taking payment information from customers of a large manufacturer or from patients at a hospital. It could also be inputting client information into a database or registering people for a service or event.
Regardless of the setting, there are certain personal characteristics that are necessary for this type of accounting support job. Applicants must be extremely detail oriented, because inputting the wrong figure could result in a monetary loss for the company or could cause a customer to incur unnecessary fees that will likely have to be remedied in the future. Excellent communication skills are also a necessity, because data entry jobs require employees to talk to a wide variety of people, some of whom may not be proficient communicators. Finally, one of the most important qualifications is the ability to type quickly and accurately. The accepted definition of quickly can range from 30 to more than 50 words per minute.
Customer Service
The requirements for customer service positions are often quite similar to those of a data entry position. Applicants need to be proficient with computers and competent typists because much of the work entails retrieving customer records and noting conversations, or possibly even taking payments. One aspect that is different is that customer service agents also need to be able to have good problem solving skills. When a customer calls customer service, it may be to place an order, but it more frequently will be to resolve a problem. The customer service agent must quickly evaluate a situation and offer a solution.
There are many different types of accounting support jobs that make it possible for other professionals to do what they do best. New graduates or those who wish to break into the field of finance may want to take a closer look at these accounting support jobs, as many of them are entry level positions.
