Accounting Jobs

Most accounting-related jobs require a degree in accounting or special certification that may be obtained after training. Other positions are willing to train applicants or prefer past experience to a specific degree. The most important qualities employers are looking for in applicants applying to the various accounting jobs is attention to detail, ability to work quickly, and the ability to work independently.

Payroll

There are several types of payroll positions. One may be expected to learn a specific type of payroll software, enter time sheet information, or check the accuracy of checks as they are printed. Typically payroll positions do not require accounting degrees, although some may. Employees need to be able to work quickly as payroll information is received and processed quickly. Attention to detail is extremely important because of the data entry portion of the positions.

Accounts Receivable

An accounts receivable position is another accounting job that doesn’t necessarily require an accounting degree. Employees must be able to maintain incoming and outgoing expenses, prepare invoices, review credit of customers and adjust as needed, and be able to perform collections duties on delinquent accounts.

Accountant

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Public accountants perform a broad range of accounting, auditing, tax, and consulting activities for their clients, which may be corporations, governments, nonprofit organizations, or individuals. For example, some public accountants concentrate on tax matters, such as advising companies about the tax advantages and disadvantages of certain business decisions and preparing individual income tax returns. Others offer advice in areas such as compensation or employee healthcare benefits, the design of accounting and data processing systems, and the selection of controls to safeguard assets. Still others audit clients' financial statements and inform investors and authorities that the statements have been correctly prepared and reported. These accountants are also referred to as external auditors. Public accountants, many of whom are Certified Public Accountants (CPAs), generally have their own businesses or work for public accounting firms.
